Vermicomposting???

So...the Wilsons just got weirder :)

No, really we just did.

My friend Nicki says she doesn't even know who I am anymore :) Haha!

We are now worm farmers and here's why!

One weekend I woke up to my hubby researching different gardening topics on YouTube. This isn't anything new. Josh LOVES YouTube and goes to the site on a weekly-sometimes daily-basis to watch videos on everything from product reviews, golf tips, gardening tips, guitar chords, car information, etc. This particular morning he was researching worm farms.

Yeah, you read that right. Worm farms.

I guess it shows how much we're "two peas in a pod" because I didn't think anything of it and immediately got my iPad and started researching worm farms on Pinterest. Before long, we were both spouting facts about the benefits of worm farming or "vermicomposting" to each other. We decided that we needed to construct our own worm farm. We found a quick how-to video on YouTube, watched it, and then went to Wal-Mart to get the needed supplies.

Eli and Josh went about constructing our worm farm and it was complete in about 15 minutes. So very easy! All we did was buy two plastic storage tubs from Walmart. We drilled holes in the bottom of one of them for drainage and then loaded it down with our compost-newspaper, cardboard, coffee grounds, vegetable scraps, eggshells, and old potato plants. Then we put it inside another plastic container without holes in it. This container is going to collect the juice or the "worm tea" as worm farmers call it. Last, Eli and Josh drilled holes in the top of the compost bin for ventilation and that was it!

Here is what the compost looked like once we added everything. Now all we have to do is order our worms and then we'll be in the worm farming business. I'm excited about this new composting adventure! I'll let you know how it turns out! If you want to start your own worm farm, here's a helpful blog post from the ladies at How Does She? to get you started! Happy Worm Farming!!
