Day Two in the Hospital

Day Two in the hospital was spent enjoying it as new parents. Our first night with Eli was great. We found that we really enjoyed being a Mommy and Daddy. Friday, we had a lot of people stop by to see Eli, but we really enjoyed those moments when it was just the three of us. There were several times during the day where we would just stare at him and smile. We couldn't believe that he was really OURS!

As you can see in the pictures, Eli came out with very long fingernails, which he used immediately to scratch his face to pieces. After this, we kept mittens on his hands constantly because no one was brave enough yet to cut his paper thin fingernails.

We discovered that Eli has a very high sucking need. One of the nurses put a pacifier in his bassinet and we found that he took a lot of comfort in that little thing. I was so scared that he would get used to it (sometimes pacifiers are not good for breastfed babies), but since we've been home, he spits it out every time we even attempt to put it in.

As you can see, when he's upset, anything he can get to suck on helps--knuckles, fingers, pacifiers, chins, noses, etc. It's so funny!

Later that night, after all the visitors had left, Josh and I settled in for another night with our newborn son. Josh LOVES holding his "Little Buddy." It's been so amazing to watch Josh transform into a father before my eyes. Before we found out that we were pregnant, babies-especially newborn babies-intimidated him. He didn't want to hold them at all. In fact, Josh had never held a newborn baby until Eli. That afternoon in the hospital when the nurses handed Josh Eli, he never looked back. Since that day, Josh has never hesitated to hold him, kiss him, change him, rock him, burp him. He is such a good Daddy to his son. I can't wait to see the incredible bond that is going to develop between the two of them.
